Beyond Visibility: Turning Presence into Opportunity

Image
Reflection A while back, I wrote about the power of digital visibility on this platform. Today, I return with a story that goes a step further, beyond simply being seen. This is about turning online presence into real opportunity. Social media is an incredibly powerful space. In just a few minutes, you can connect with people across the world, far more than you could physically reach within the same amount of time. What makes digital platforms even more valuable is the freedom to engage with individuals and communities that align with your interests, goals, and aspirations. You choose your space, and in turn, it shapes your growth. A Scroll That Changed Everything On this particular day, I was scrolling through LinkedIn, a platform I consider both focused and professional. It’s where I engage with meaningful content and connect with like-minded individuals. As I browsed, I came across a call for educators passionate about innovation and the creation of learning resources. The opportuni...

A reflection on Cousins, Family and Grief

Image
As I travel along the Nakuru highway from Nairobi toward Nyahururu, my heart feels heavy because we are mourning the sudden loss of our nephew, Mwangi, through a tragic road accident at 25 years of age. The landscape passes by in quiet motion, and in this stillness, I’m compelled to write because writing has always been one of the truest ways I express my emotions. Today, I’m reflecting on life, family, and loss in a way I never have before. Seeing Death Through a New Lens Death has always been something I understood differently, but now I’m seeing it from a new angle, especially when it touches someone as close as a cousin. When a cousin loses a child, the shock reverberates through the entire family. My cousin’s sudden loss of her firstborn son has struck us deeply, not just because he was family, but because we have shared a long, close, and meaningful relationship. In many families, cousins are far more than relatives. They are often your first best friends, the ones who know your ...

Walking 12 Kilometres To Purpose: Celebrating 20th Anniversary of Teaching

Image
Twenty years ago, I received my first posting letter as a newly qualified teacher. The excitement was real, but nothing could have prepared me for what lay ahead. My assigned school was tucked deep in a rural area I had never heard of. Finding it was a challenge in itself. I had to navigate unfamiliar roads, ask for directions from strangers, and make my way through isolated terrain. When I finally arrived, I was met with a reality that shook me. The classrooms were dilapidated, with earthen floors and no furniture. There were no houses to rent nearby, so I walked 12 kilometres each day to and from a small town, the nearest place I could find accommodation. It was a daily test of physical endurance and emotional strength. That experience was a culture shock. It was not the beginning I had imagined. Yet, despite everything, I was determined. I knew I was stepping into something greater than myself. I was ready, not just to teach, but to grow, to serve, and to embrace every l...

Digital based resources

Since 2005, I've been teaching in public primary schools in Kilifi County, Kenya. Teaching has been an exciting experience that has rounded out a part of me. As a teacher, I've always lived by the mantra, "Service to humanity is service to God." Kilifi County is one of Kenya's semi-arid areas, where many children have only obtained a basic education due to the community's low economic status. One of the most difficult issues I've had to deal with is keeping girls in school, as there is a high dropout rate due to child marriage and early pregnancies.      One of my greatest accomplishments in my mission has been keeping expectant girls in school until they have completed their primary school education and possibly even higher levels of learning. In 2017, there was an increase in the number of girls pregnant at my school, and seeing young girls' dreams crumble was...
